How to Save Money on Your Monthly Gas Bill

With the rising cost of living in South Africa, every rand counts, especially when it comes to household utilities. Many households use gas for cooking, water heating, and even space heating during winter.

While gas is often more budget-friendly than electricity, your monthly gas bill can still add up. Here are practical ways to cut down your gas usage and save money each month.

1. Use Efficient Appliances

Not all gas appliances are created equal. Look for those with a high energy efficiency rating. Modern gas stoves, geysers, and heaters are designed to use less gas while delivering the same performance.

If you’re still using an old stove or water heater, upgrading to a newer model could pay off in the long run.

2. Cook Smart

Cooking habits make a big difference. Use pots with lids to trap heat, reducing cooking time. Match pot size to burner size to avoid energy waste. Preparing one-pot meals or batch cooking can also help you get more out of each gas session.

If your stove has an ignition button, use it instead of matches or lighters, which can encourage unnecessary gas flow.

3. Switch Off Promptly

Many people leave burners or heaters running longer than needed. Turn off the gas as soon as you’re done using it. For example, you can switch off the stove a few minutes before your food is completely cooked, the residual heat will finish the job.

4. Regular Maintenance

A well-maintained gas appliance runs more efficiently. Clean your stove burners for an even flame, and have your gas geyser serviced annually to check for leaks or inefficiencies. Poorly maintained equipment often uses more gas than necessary.

5. Install a Gas Timer or Thermostat

If you use gas heaters or a gas geyser, installing a timer or thermostat can help prevent overuse. A thermostat maintains a consistent temperature without wasting fuel, while a timer ensures appliances only run when necessary.

6. Buy Gas in Bulk

Many households buy 9kg or 19kg cylinders. Larger cylinders often offer a better price per kilogram. Consider teaming up with neighbours to share delivery costs or getting a gas account from a supplier with bulk discounts.

By making small changes in how you use and manage gas in your home, you can enjoy the benefits of gas appliances without burning through your monthly budget.
